Breaking Up: Do’s and Don’ts

The end of a relationship is hard for everyone involved, whether you’re the one who’s breaking up or the one being broken up with. Here are some do’s and don’ts to help make things a little bit easier.

When Ending a Relationship

  • If possible, have the conversation in person. A message or a phone call may make the break up harder.
  • When talking with them focus on aspects of the relationship that were problematic.
  • Don’t give your partner false hope. If you want to end it, be clear with them.
  • Be prepared for this conversation to be difficult.
  • Have a self care plan.

Surviving a Break Up

  • Give yourself space and time to grieve.
  • Avoid contacting your ex or visiting places that remind you of them while you grieve.
  • Don’t isolate yourself, seek support from friends and family. Tell them about your experience. A little empathy from a friend can go a long way.
  • Avoid starting a rebound relationship and take some time to focus on yourself.
  • Find healthy ways to occupy your time such as reading, exercise, or joining a club or student group.
  • Avoid making big decisions while upset.
  • Accept that break ups happen.
