Professional Interests

Shu-Yi is interested in mindfulness, mood disorders, self-esteem, men’s issues, existentialism, and social justice. He also enjoys working with international students, addressing the experiences of transitioning to another culture. In terms of research, he focuses on psychology of men and masculinities, cultural psychology, and positive psychology.

Approach to Therapy

Shu-Yi approaches the counseling process from an integrative perspective, informed by strength-based principles, mindfulness, interpersonal-process theories, existential psychotherapy, and cognitive-behavioral approaches. He believes that healing begins in a safe relationship, so he strives to create a nonjudgmental environment where clients can develop compassionate awareness that fosters therapeutic change.

Approach to Supervision

Shu-Yi’s approach to supervision mirrors his view on therapy. He believes in the necessity of a trusting relationship, upon which he utilizes techniques from constructivist and cognitive-behavioral theories to facilitate trainees’ professional growth. He values feedback and works to strike a balance between challenge and support in supervision.

Approach to Wellness

In his spare time, Shu-Yi likes exercising, watching movies of all kinds, hanging out with friends, eating out, and playing with his cat Mr. Darcy. He enjoys playing board games and reading as well. Recently, he has been trying to pick up drawing as a way to reconnect with his artistic part.
