Dr. Peggy Rios works with a variety of presenting concerns and has developed special interests in empowerment theory, medical psychology, and trauma treatment.

Approach to Therapy

Peggy utilizes several key perspectives in her understanding of client’s experience including empowerment, attachment, and interpersonal theories. Her interventions are focused on developing a strong empathic therapeutic relationship to fully understand the client’s experience and then to provide opportunities for skill building and change using schema & cognitive behavioral and interpersonal therapies as well as emotion regulation and stress management techniques. She also has many years of experience working with people with life altering medical conditions. She has facilitated support groups and offered individual psychotherapy for people affected by cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and other serious conditions.

Approach to Supervision

Dr. Rios’s approach to supervision integrates developmental and multicultural perspectives. She uses an interpersonal collaborative style and works with supervisees to explore career/professional identities as a way of creating meaning, balance, and wellbeing. In addition, practical skill building is also supported and highlighted in order to meet career goals and encourage a sense of self-efficacy.

Approach to Wellness

Dr. Rios values spending time with friends and family, enjoying exercise and the outdoors. She is also a meditator and enjoys yearly silent retreats.
