Professional Interests

His areas of professional interest include couples, groups, trauma survivors, anxiety issues, counseling with immigrants and international students, and supervision. His research interests focus on counseling with international students and cross-cultural communications issues.

Approach to Therapy

Dr. Choi’s approach to therapy can be best described as integrative with an emphasis on interpersonal process, client centered, emotion focus, and cognitive behavioral approaches. He also draws from relational-cultural theory and mindfulness training in his practice.

Approach to Supervision

Dr. Choi utilizes a developmental perspective and adapts his approach to supervisee’s needs, goals, and skill level. He believes in a supportive and collaborative style while shifting his roles from teacher to consultant to mentor as needed. He enjoys the use of self in supervision and in therapy and he emphasizes the awareness of self and the inter-connectedness of self and others as well as the macro social cultural system.

Approach to Wellness

Dr. Choi enjoys spending time with his family in his leisure time. He particularly enjoys his daily tea time with his wife and outdoor activities (e.g., swimming, crab catching, bike riding) with his son and wife.

Professional membership

He is a member of Association of Psychology Training Clinics and APA division 17, 45, and 52. He is also a member and former officer of Asian American Psychological Association and a past Chair of Taiwanese Psychology Network.
